Filmed in Germany by American director John Huston, Freud is a
sincerely felt but, perhaps overly-simplistic bio-pic of the pioneering
psychotherapist. The screenplay takes the shape of a detective
mystery, attempting to link various crises in Freud's private and
professional life with his theoretical conclusions, most often doing so
within well-staged dream sequences.

During the late 19th century, most of Freud's colleagues refused to
attempt to cure hysteric patients because of the mistaken belief that
they were "faking it" in order to gain attention. However, Freud leans
to use hypnosis in order to find a deeper reasoning for the psychosis.

In the film, his primary patient is a young woman who refuses to drink
water and is plagued by the same nightmare.
