Synopsis:

Comets and Asteroids:
Comets, with their characteristic elongated vapor tails have fascinated star gazers throughout time. Asteroids, which are small, minor planets, have been discovered mainly through high powered photography. The film uses 3-D animation, computer-generated images, and deep space photography to reveal some the secret lives of asteroids and comets. The dramatic story of their previous collisions with the earth is presented, along with NASA's plans for protecting the earth from future impacts.

Sudden Impact: Meteors:
Some things, like meteors, move through space a little faster than some other things, like the planet Earth. Learn about the meteors that have always proved fascinating to humans as they rocket across the galaxy and sometimes go crashing into the earth. Thank goodness for our planet's atmosphere that burns up so many of the "falling stones" before they can do real damage. The program points out that damage is possible, and on a big scale, too.

Final Target: Planet Earth:
What's the chance that an asteroid or comet is on a collision course with planet Earth? What's being done to detect objects that could obliterate us? How much of the sky has been searched? You'll find answers to these and other provocative questions in Final Target: Planet Earth, a 50-minute documentary that discusses NASA's current and future plans for dealing with objects that could destroy life as we know it. With the aid of state-of-the-art 3-D animation, computer-generated images, and deep space photographs, experts from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory detail plans of sending unmanned or robotic spacecraft on missions to locate, observe, and investigate the comets and asteroids that threaten our planet. A highlight of the program includes a description of the protection and survival scenarios being developed in anticipation of a catastrophic collision.
