Synopsis:
Banks's ambitious novel tells two parallel and interlocking stories. Bob Dubois is a New Hampshire oil-burner repairman who hopes to start over in Florida, where his brother has promised him a good job in his liquor store. He and his family move there-and, after a violent robbery at the store, Dubois very quickly loses any semblance of control over his life. At the same time, a Haitian woman named Vanise Dorsinville and her young son, illegal immigrants, also settle in Florida, looking for a better life. These two stories weave together in a heart-rending narrative of struggle and failure. In authorial asides, Banks inserts himself into the narrative to provide information on the characters, and analyses of their faults and virtues.
